"My dance journey started at a very young age under the training of my father (Late Prof. Shyamji) who devoted his entire life to Kathak. He spent most of his life teaching Kathak in Mumbai. He was a multi-talented person, who wore many hats as a teacher, director, choreographer, musician, singer, instrumentalist (tabla, harmonium, sitar, guitar, dhol...the list goes on). Under him, I also learnt various Indian folk dances such as Bhangra, Gidda, Ghoomar etc.

Later on, I had the opportunity to train under Late Rama Devi for a few years. After my graduation I moved to Delhi to further my Kathak training under Pt. Birju Maharajji at Kathak Kendra, Delhi. This is where, I also met my current mentor and guide Guru Malti Shyam and Pt. Jai Kishan Maharaj. At Kathak Kendra, I learnt the intricacies and finer details to hone my skills as a Kathak dancer. While at Kathak Kendra, I had the honour of being part of Pt. Birju Maharajji’s production, ‘Hori Dhoom Machori’ in 1998 and Guru Geetanjali Lal’s production staged at Kamani auditorium, Delhi in 1997.

In my early years besides Kathak, I learnt Bharatanatyam for over a decade to further my dance repertoire. For Bharatanatyam, I trained at Sri Rajarajeshwari Bharatha Natya Kala Mandir, Mumbai, under the guidance of Guru Sri. T.K.Mahalingam Pillai and Guru G. Vasant Kumar. Later, I also had a chance to learn under Guru Smt. Rajee Narayan, at Nritya Geethanjali. Under her tutelage, I had the privilege to be part of her production, ‘Mahakavi Subramanya Bharati’, presented at NCPA, Tata Theatre, Mumbai in 1993.

I also completed teacher training course for Yoga from the The Yoga Institute, Mumbai. 

I am now based in UK and want to follow my passion and stay connected with Kathak by teaching Kathak using the online channel for students in UK and worldwide. Dancing always made me happy and this happiness is worth spreading."
